Hughes: We must embrace underdogs tag

28/03/2023

Centre Steff Hughes has urged Dragons to embrace the underdogs tag in the EPCR Challenge Cup showdown with Glasgow Warriors as they bid to bounce back from derby defeat in the right manner.

The Men of Gwent head to Scotland to tussle with the Warriors at Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday evening (kick-off 5.30pm) for a crunch last 16 knockout tie.

Glasgow go into the game as favourites after defeating Munster in the league last time out - while Dragons slipped to a disappointing loss at Ospreys.

Hughes acknowledges Dragons must raise their game and learn the lessons of a painful derby defeat.

“There’s no better way to go in with no pressure, being underdogs in Glasgow and taking them on, having a go and really trying to show the way we want to play,” said Hughes.

“We need to attack with multi options, we need to have variety in our game, and we need to be disciplined. If we do all those things, we give ourselves a shot.

“There are some obvious lessons from the Ospreys game for us that we can learn quickly and having the opportunity to go again next week is great,” he added.

“It’s been frustrating these past few weeks where we’ve played a game and then had to wait to play another.

“It’ll be good to go again next week and there are a lot of lessons we need to learn quickly.”

Hughes admits Dragons must now look to rediscover the form of the first block of the season – when they defeated Munster, Ospreys and Zebre on home soil – if they are to continue the European journey.

He said: “That’s the frustration for us - consistency. There are aspects of our game that are good, and we have good moments, but then it’s the inaccuracy and indiscipline. It takes a lot of energy out of us.

“In the first block there were so many good games and performances, we need to try and put all that together for a good performance in Scotland next week.

“We need to play as a collective rather than as individuals. If we can do that and we can learn quickly, there’s no reason why we can’t go out to win.”
