Dyer loving World Cup experience

19/09/2023

Dragons RFC wing Rio Dyer is loving every minute of World Cup action – as Wales gear for a massive battle with Australia as they look to book a place in the knockout stages.

The 23-year-old was picked out by head coach Warren Gatland once again for his efforts in the 28-8 win over Portugal in Nice.

Dyer will now be hoping to get a chance when Wales face Australia in Lyon on Sunday in a vital game.

Wales beat the Wallabies in the pool stages in Japan four years ago - but that was only the second win in seven World Cup clashes with the Wallabies.

“There are things we can fix, but the bigger picture is that we’re two games in and we’ve got two bonus points. We should take that as a positive,” said Dyer.

“There are both negatives and positives to be taken out of the two games we’ve had to date. Now we must gather again and put in a performance against Australia.

“Momentum for any team or player is a positive thing. It gets you onto the front foot and keeps you going and going and going.

“You can keep pushing teams and keep them under the pump. When we were under the pump a bit against Portugal, we just kept going and didn’t fall out of our structure too much and got the result we wanted.”

Reflecting on then Portugal performance, Dyer added: “It was great to get the bonus point, but we made it more difficult for ourselves than we should have with our discipline. “Our handling errors weren’t great for us. We’ll look back and review it and be more clinical next week.

“I enjoyed it, though. I’d have liked to touch the ball a bit more, but it’s about giving 110 per cent for the team, it is not always about you touching the ball.

“Aerial battles are something I look at. It’s a big aspect of the game that’s not looked at too much, but it is important.”
