Flanagan reflects on final league loss

01/06/2024

Head Coach Dai Flanagan reflected on a difficult season and looked to the future after final day defeat against Scarlets in Judgement Day at Cardiff City Stadium.

Sio Tomkinson grabbed a try double but the Men of Gwent fell to a 32-15 loss in the BKT United Rugby Championship against the West Walians since 2007/08.

“It was exactly how we have been all season. We do well for periods, we start decent and move the ball, and we contain them,” said Flanagan.

“Then we have a scrum in our 22 when we are in full control that goes penalty, corner, maul and try. We are then chasing the game. It’s things that we can control.

“It’s hard to reflect on one game because I am probably reflecting on the last 12 months. “It’s been a tough season,” he added.

“There are games we should have won, there are games we have lost and we can hold our hands up because sometimes we are not good enough to win games.

“This game sums up the opportunities we have had that we haven’t capitalised on.

“I am proud of certain things we have achieved. I am bitterly disappointed in others.”

Flanagan believes there were reasons to be positive to the future and highlighted a number of key performers in the capital.

“Joe Westwood playing a full 80 minutes in a derby game is a positive and he will have a big summer. You can see the moments he has,” he added.

“Rio (Dyer) works hard and he is learning to evolve his game not just be the best in the world at chasing kicks. He has just got to be accurate when he is on it.

“The front row that came on were superb. Dmitri (Arhip) will have a big part to play for us and Rodrigo (Martinez) has massive potential. He is just feeling his way back after not really playing for two years.”

Meanwhile, Flanagan revealed Wales back row Aaron Wainwright had suffered a dead leg when taken off at half-time.
