Flanagan upbeat on Hewitt progress

28/06/2024

Head Coach Dai Flanagan has revealed wing Ashton Hewitt ‘flying’ on the comeback trail – and hopeful the speedster could make a rapid return for the first block of the new BKT United Rugby Championship.

Hewitt, 29, has been out of since rupturing ligaments in his right knee in training ahead of the New Year’s Day derby with Scarlets.

But the Newport-born wide man – who has 36 tries in his Rodney Parade career - is making positive progress as he looks to return for a second serious injury in three and a half years.

“Ashton is flying and will aim to be back at the end of September or start of October,” said Flanagan.

“He has been working his tail off and is a tremendous professional, so ideally, we will get him back for a game in that first block of six fixtures.

“Ashton cares so much about this club and wants to succeed, so he is desperate to get back on the field after such a frustrating injury just as he was getting back to his best.

"Ashton is a power runner who comes off his wing and carries hard off 9 and 10,” added Flanagan. “He has the ability to beat the first defender time after time.”
