'The Game' Celebrates Newport's Rugby Community

17/05/2024

Operasonic, a Newport-based music charity, has unveiled their latest project, "The Game," a short film paying homage to the rugby community at NHSOB and the vibrant people of Newport.

Collaborating with Harvey Evans, Tayla-Leigh Payne, REDBRCK film productions, Fabulo, and Operasonic's Young Cohort, the 8-minute film captures the essence of grassroots rugby while emphasizing the significance of community and collaboration.

Led by Harvey Evans, the project has engaged nearly 200 children from Newport schools in workshops promoting self-expression through songwriting and music-making. Operasonic's Young Cohort and the French ensemble, Fabulo, have provided inspirational performances and interactions.

"The Game" aims to highlight the camaraderie and emotional connection associated with rugby against the backdrop of the Newport community. Its soundtrack, composed by Tayla-Leigh Payne, draws inspiration from the young talents of Newport.

Harvey Evans expressed, “We believe in the power of art and culture to build connections between communities. ‘The Game’ is not just a film; it's a celebration of Welsh culture. We want to share our passion for rugby, music, and community with the people of France and, in doing so, foster a deeper connection between our cultures.”

Funded by British Council Wales, in partnership with the Arts Council of Wales, Wales Arts International, and the Welsh Government, "The Game" is part of a £100K Wales-France Cultural Fund. The project's impact on Newport and Operasonic has been significant, inspiring pride in the local community.

Composer Tayla reflected on her experience, stating, “What was incredible about this whole process and my involvement on this project was seeing how inspired young people were and also instilling confidence in their abilities to create sound and music without the need of formal music training.”

"The Game" stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, culture, and community spirit, aiming to resonate with audiences in Newport and beyond.
