Dragons support Tiny Forest In Memory

03/01/2025

Dragons RFC were honoured to support Pontnewydd Primary School in Cwmbran as they recently planted trees in memory of their late headteacher.

The school were given £29,030 from the National Lottery’s Heritage Fund as a tribute to Kerry Waters.

More than 350 pupils along with members of their families, staff and the community.

Dragons wing Jared Rosser along with Stadium Operations Manager Ian Wilkinson mucked in, along with representatives from Newport County AFC and other local businesses.

The hard work resulted in 600 trees being planted, creating the Primary school’s Tiny Forest.

The initiative is designed to create habitat for butterflies, birds, bees and other wildlife whilst giving the children a place to connect with and learn about nature.

These Outdoor Classrooms will provide incentives for children to play outdoors, with increasing health benefits both physical and mental.

Meanwhile the forests will be a positive aid in the continued work towards a green planet, something Dragons RFC are proud to be a part of, with our continued efforts at promoting sustainable travel.

Acting head of Pontnewydd Primary, Ann-Marie Maloney, said: "We are incredibly grateful to have received the funding to undertake such a worthwhile project that not only impacts our children now, but children in the future.”

"This positive project has come at a time when our community has been rocked by such sadness."

Former headteacher Mr Waters, served as headteacher for 16 years but sadly passed away in October. Both the community and council expressed their deep sorrow at his passing, describing him as a much-loved and respected leader.
