The Community Projects team at Newport Gwent Dragons is appealing to comprehensive schools in Gwent to join them in a competition to create a new mural at Rodney Parade.
They have teamed up with electricity company Western Power Distribution (WPD) to find a local school who can design a rugby themed mural for Rodney Parade.
The budding young artists will be asked to use their skill and imagination to create a drawing or poster illustrating a theme of youngsters and their involvement in the community spirit of rugby at Rodney Parade. Why not visit their web site at
www. newportgwentdragons. com / community, to help with your ideas.
The competition will be run in association with the South Wales Argus during February. The closing date for entries will be Monday 30th March. (Terms and conditions apply.)
Phil James, Dragons community projects team spokesman said: “We are looking to refurbish our offices with a new modern mural positioned on our front wall where it will be seen by all visitors to the ground.
“We would like to invite all senior schools in Gwent to take part in the competition and the winning entry will be selected by our community team and a representative of WPD.”
The winner will receive an iPod nano and their school will receive a cash prize of £200.
The winner and their classmates will also be invited to meet the Dragons players and enjoy a day at Rodney Parade. In addition all entrants will receive a Dragon’s complimentary match day ticket for one of the remaining matches of the season.
“WPD have previously supported the Dragons education scheme and so we are pleased to be working in partnership with them again this year. We are delighted to be involved with a project that will have a lasting and distinctive outcome at Rodney Parade” said Karen Welch, WPD’s Public Relations Officer.
Tracey Short the head of St Julians art department explained;
“ We have already won a prize for our work in the Community Drop in Centre, and now we would hope for further success with the Dragons.
I am sure our students will relish the opportunity to take part in this competition”.
So the gauntlet has been thrown down to all the comprehensives throughout the region, as Dragons head coach Paul Turner would say you have to be in it to win it!!
Publicity for the competition will be featured in the South Wales Argus and on the Dragons website and match day programmes.
