The Men of Gwent snatched the lead from the Scarlets at the very end of the tournament as they beat them on points in the table.
Last year the Dragons made it through to the Stoop but were edged out by winners of the title Gloucester in the final match of the day.
The first match up for the Dragons was against the Scarlets. The West Region came out of the starting blocks strong as Shaun Pearce found space in the Dragons defence to cross for the first try of the match, with a simple conversion the West Region led the match. But it wasn’t long until the Dragons secured their first try of the afternoon as Dorian Jones made it over the whitewash with the conversion being added by brother and Captain of the Dragons sevens team, Geraint Rhys Jones. With the score equal and it being both of the teams first matches of the day, it was all to play for. But it was the Scarlets who once again domineered the play as Luke Treharne crossed for their second try, with the conversion successful the half time in sight. But with a yellow card awarded to the Scarlets it was Wales U20s star and Dragons flanker Ollie Griffiths who made the most of the space and dashed over the line – but it wasn’t enough as the Scarlets took the win 24-19.
Next up for the Dragons were the Ospreys and it was the Liberty Stadium outfit who struck first when Ross Jones went over for a try and converted it. However with two yellow cards the Dragons were able to make the most of it and score two trys, one from Wales U20s Lloyd Lewis and one from man of the tournament Elliot Frewen. The Ospreys fought back with a try of their own but it was winger Lloyd Lewis who sealed the win with a bonus point, with Dorian Jones adding another try for an additional boost of morale.
Last up it was the Blues to take on the Men of Gwent and Luke Crocker started the match as they meant to go on. The Ebbw Vale star went over for the first try of the match in the second minute to make it 5-0. Frewen added another for the Dragons but the Blues were hot on his heels as Owen Jenkins corssed the try line for the opposition. However, Newport scrum-half Jonny Lewis crossed the whitewash in the second half with clubmate Frewen adding an additional try.
Mike Hale responded for the hosts but it was fly-half Arwel Robson who went over for the fifth try to secure the Welsh title for the Dragons.
