Griffiths relishing champions challenge

Back row star Ollie Griffiths is relishing the tough run of fixtures during December - kicking-off with a battle against European and Guinness PRO14 champions Leinster Rugby.

Dragons face the powerful Irish province on home soil on Saturday (kick-off 5.15pm) as they start a run of games that also features two European away trips and the Welsh derbies.

However, all-action Griffiths – named man-of-the-match against Edinburgh last weekend on his return, believes Dragons can take renewed confidence into the opening clash.

“We have a tough run of games with Leinster before Northampton and Clermont away. But to get that win against Edinburgh gives us confidence. Everyone is a more relaxed and we can kick on,” he said.

“You look at the depth they (Leinster) have got, they could put a second or third team out and they are still quality players.

“A lot of their Irish boys could be back, but regardless of that, they have got so much quality it will be a tough challenge.

“It was nice to get the win against Edinburgh,” he added. “There was a bit of pressure on us to get the win so hopefully we made the fans proud and we certainly needed it.

“It was a bit close for comfort at the end, but we managed to squeeze out the win and our defence was good in the last few minutes with the boys working hard for each other.

“On a personal level, I had missed two league games and the Russia game so my fitness didn’t drop off too much. It was only a small groin injury, so it was easy to slot back in.”

Griffiths has also spoken about his continued desire to push his Wales claims after being overlooked during the autumn.

“I would love to be involved, especially after having a taste of it when the Lions were touring and I went to play Tonga in Auckland,” he said.

“I have just got to keep doing what I am doing. Train well, play well and if it comes I am ready for it.

“You’ve got to bide your time and if you get an opportunity you have to be ready.

“I totally respect the decision this autumn,” he added. “The players who did get picked are brilliant players. I’ve just got to keep building and play well enough to get my chance.”
