Dragons centre Aneurin Owen is targeting a big finish to the Six Nations with Wales Under-20s – admitting confidence is high after big wins over France and England.
Wales stunned England in Gloucester on Friday evening to move up to fourth place in the table – after propping up everyone else after defeats to Italy and Ireland in the opening rounds.
And Dragons Academy graduate Owen – who was joined in the match day squad by regional team-mates Ben Carter, Will Griffiths, Ed Scragg and Dafydd Buckland – wants a final flourish when they tackle the Scots.
“You don’t get much bigger moments (than beating England) so we enjoyed it,” said the 19-year-old.
“As a group, we know understand what the coaches want from us and how we want to play the game.
“We managed the middle third really well in the first half against England and when it was on to play we showed what we could do.
“In previous games we’ve played in that middle third, lost the ball and we are under cosh again and concede points.
“We’ve been building week on week,” he added. “The results are coming now and we want to keep improving.
“Hopefully people can see we have been getting better and how we want to play the game.
“The first two results were not what we were after, but we felt we were getting better and clicking as a group.
“We have beaten France and we have beaten England in successive weeks. The belief is there now and we are in a good place.”
Owen was also quick to praise man-of-the-match Sam Costelow who scored a try, converted both tries, kicked two penalties and struck the match winning drop goal to secure the 23-22 victory.
“I have been playing outside of Sam for years and know exactly what he can do,” said Owen.
“It’s great to see him perform on a big stage like this and he was really good. He kept us in the game with his kicking.
“When you have a player like that, you give him chances on the ball and give him opportunities to make things happen.
“It was nice to be on his shoulder and we finished the tries pretty well.”
Scotland will now be the visitors to Stadiwm Zipworld in Colywn Bay this weekend and Owen wants another positive performance to build momentum ahead of the World Rugby Junior Championships in Italy in July.
“The aim is to finish with a win,” he said. “The coaches will ensure we know what we need to do and support us.
“Hopefully we can put another performance in and the results keep coming.”
