Supporting National Sporting Heritage Day

28/09/2023

Dragons Community and Sporting Memories groups from across our region joined forces this week for a special event ahead of National Sporting Heritage Day.

In partnership with Disability Sport Wales, our Sporting Memories members enjoyed a special Paralympic heritage themed insport Series event at Rodney Parade on Wednesday (September 27).

National Sporting Heritage Day takes place this Saturday (September 30). The day gives people the opportunity to take part in sporting heritage activities across the country, to celebrate the impact sports heritage has on all our lives. This year's theme celebrates community in sport with events and activities happening shine a light on the sporting stories in our communities.

At Dragons RFC we celebrated paralympic sporting heritage by giving Sporting Memories participants the opportunity to try out paralympic themed sports and activities.

The Sporting Memories Wales programme successfully uses the power of sport to engage with people living with dementia, depression or are socially isolated.

Children from Maindee Primary School also joined in at the event, sitting among all our Sporting Memories members, chatting, and joining in with the quiz. They also sang a song while using sign language.

“It was a fantastic day and wonderful to see all our Sporting Memories groups come together at Rodney Parade,” said Karen Burgess, Dragons Inclusion Officer at Dragons RFC.

“We enjoyed an inter club competition in the Paralympic sport of Boccia – to coincide with National Boccia Day – plus a quiz that included a competitive spot the ball round. Lots of prizes were given to our winners who all really enjoyed themselves.”

Steve McGrath and Morgan Jones from Disability Sports Wales, plus national sporting memories lead Rob Baker, were also in attendance on the day.

“It was great working in partnership with the Dragons to celebrate National Sporting Heritage Day with a Paralympic heritage themed insport series event,” said Steve McGrath, Regional Partnership Senior Officer Gwent for Disability Sport Wales.

“Everyone seemed to be having a great time and particularly enjoyed trying out Boccia in recognition of National Boccia Day.”

Sporting Heritage are proud to support community sporting heritage activity across the UK through a programme of locally focused projects which celebrate National Sporting Heritage Day on September 30 every year. Follow the action @sportinghistory. #NSHD2023
