Defeat for Six Dragons in Cork clash

23/02/2024

Wales went down to a second successive defeat in the U20 Six Nations as they conceded six tries in Cork in another crushing loss to the Irish.

The home side were seeking to extend their unbeaten home run in the tournament to 13 games as they stayed on course for a third Grand Slam in a row with another impressive triumph.

Three of the home tries came from hookers, Henry Walker and his replacement Danny Sheahan, who scored twice, while centre Hugh Gavin, back row man Sean Edogbo and full back Ben O’Connor grabbing the others.

Wales’ only try came from scrum half Ieuan Davies in the second half after the side’s had changed ends with the home outfit leading 17-3. The visitors lost hooker Harry Thomas to the sin-bin for a no-arms tackle early in the game and then his replacement, Evan Wood, picked up another yellow card 15 minutes from time.

Once again the Welsh front row found themselves under pressure, with their lineout proving to be their biggest problem area. They won only 63% of their own throws as the pressure mounted.

They conceded 14 penalties to add to the two yellow cards, while Ireland gave away only five. The home side dominated possession and territory as they made it three out of three.

Dragons aces Harri Ackerman, Huw Anderson, Harry Rees-Weldon, Walker Price and Nick Thomas all started the game while Jordan Morris was a second half replacement.

Wales Under-20s are next in action when they tackle France Under-20s on March 7.
