Wales aces back for crunch Italian clash

28/03/2024

Wales trio Rio Dyer, Elliot Dee and Aaron Wainwright all start as Dragons RFC face Zebre Parma in a huge BKT United Rugby Championship encounter on Friday evening (kick-off 7.35pm).

The internationals return as part of seven changes made by Head Coach Dai Flanagan for the crunch clash at Rodney Parade.

Dyer is recalled back out wide alongside Jared Rosser while centre Aneurin Owen is the other change in midfield, with captain Steff Hughes moving to outside centre.

Dee starts up front alongside Luke Yendle while lock Ben Carter, who made a successful comeback last weekend, is paired with Matthew Screech in the second row.

Number Eight Aaron Wainwright returns to the starting line-up with Sean Lonsdale moving across the back row to blindside flanker. Taine Basham moves to openside.

Prop Dmitri Arhip could make his club debut from the bench where there is also a recall for James Benjamin.

Boss Dai Flanagan said: “It’s a big game because we need to win our home games. We must turn up to every game expecting to win, especially at Rodney Parade.

“The boys are up for it; everyone is excited and having a bit of a run of games at home as well is great. We want to put on the show.

“We were millimetres away from doing better things last weekend (against Bulls) and we need to execute this Good Friday to win the game.

“Our first task is to repeat physically where we were last week,” he added.

"I thought we won a lot of first contact against a massive Bulls team. Not many teams have done that against them. Italian teams are also physical, they thrive on a motion, so we need to bring physicality and energy.”
