David Richards came through the ranks at Monmouth School and was quickly identified as a potential talent by The Dragons. He joined Newport whilst in the Dragons Academy for the start of the 2018/19 season and impressed for the Black and Ambers, making 18 appearances in the back three and scoring four tries.

Richards played club rugby in New Zealand over the summer of 2019 but returned to train with Newport for the 2019/2020 season while remaining in the Dragons academy. Richards is yet to make his professional debut for the Dragons but has been involved in A and development games for his home region. The young full back will be looking to make the jump to senior professional rugby ahead of the 2021/2022 season.
