There have been 1,046 players capped by Wales since James Bevan led the first national team into action against England in 1881.
A Wales rugby cap is one of the most prized possessions in Welsh sport – a step towards rugby immortality.
But who are the Greatest Welsh Rugby Players of all time? That was the question posed by WREX, the body that represents the former Welsh rugby internationals.
On 24 November, on the 200th birthday of the founder of the game, William Webb Ellis, the first five of an eventual 15 Welsh Greats will be revealed at a gala dinner at Cardiff's City Hall.
Event organisers, Greatest Ever Ltd, put together a selection panel of six Welsh rugby experts to tackle the first part of the WREX challenge.
Former Welsh captains Bleddyn Williams, Dai Watkins and Mervyn Davies were joined by Wales and Lions wing JJ Williams, former Wales coach Alan Davies and Wales' foremost rugby historian, Prof Dai Smith, to form a group of selectors charged with picking the best Welsh forward and back from the Fifties, Sixties, Seventies, Eighties and Nineties.
They spent more than three hours deliberating. From an initial list of the five best forwards and backs of each decade they eventually came up with their top two.
By 24 November, they will have whittled their choice down to the best player from each decade.
WREX and Greatest Ever Ltd are inviting rugby lovers to join the debate and vote for their favourite players from each decade. The short lists of forwards and backs, will feature on the Dragons website and on www.greatestever.com to allow as many people as possible to vote for their Greatest Ever player from the five decades.
The winners will become the first five names onto the team sheet for the Greatest Ever Wales XV.
The candidates for the Fifties, Sixties, Seventies, Eighties and Nineties will be featured on the website but who would you pick as the best back and forward of each decade?
