Robson ready for the battle for No.10

Fly half Arwel Robson is relishing the battle for No.10 – and has urged the Dragons to build on a ‘mature’ performance over Zebre Rugby.

Ben Mottram | 24/09/2018

Robson scored a first half try as Bernard Jackman’s men secured a crucial 16-5 win over the Italians in the Guinness PRO14.

The 21-year-old was making his first senior start since ankle surgery in pre-season and was pleased to get the minutes under the belt and help guide the team to victory.

“I thought it was a mature performance,” said Robson, reflecting on the second home win of the season. “The ball was a like a bar of soap, so we had to play to the corners.

“It wasn’t all attractive rugby, but sometimes you have to play the conditions and we did that.

“I was happy with the try. but I think I’ll bring my kicking boots next week,” he smiled.

“It was good to get sixty minutes in, that’s my first sixty in 17 to 18 weeks since my operation in pre-season, so it was nice for the lungs as well.

“I did the ankle injury first against the Scarlets at Parc y Scarlets and I had twelve weeks out. I didn’t need an operation so I played the last four or five games of the season, but was still struggling with it.

“I had another scan and there were a few tears there, so I ended up having two operations on it.

“Zebre was my first start back since then, after a long time in the gym, but you’ve got to do that to get back on the field fit. I now feel faster and stronger.”

Robson admits there is now no time to rest on his laurels with fierce competition for the starting jersey.

And next up is a difficult trip north as Dragons head to the Scotstoun Stadium to face Glasgow Warriors this Saturday (kick-off 7.35pm).

“The boys are competing for the ten jersey and putting pressure on each other,” said Robson.

“Obviously Gav (Henson) is going to come back in soon so that’s a great place to be for us to be, with boys pushing each other. You can’t rest and just keep pushing on in training.

“I like to play a running game, but conditions took over against Zebre and you’ve got to be mature. I know that’s an area I need to add to my game, my maturity, and I think me and Rods (Rhodri Williams) did a decent job, playing the conditions and getting the win.

“With two wins now it’s about kicking on and performances,” added Robson. “We’re at Glasgow next and there’s nothing to lose there, so hopefully we can pick something up.

“Then we have the Cardiff Blues game at home. If I play it will be my first derby so that will be a really good event. There’s a packed crowd here every time so we look forward to that and hopefully being involved.”

Dragons return to action at Rodney Parade against Cardiff Blues on Saturday 6 October, 5.15pm. Early bird tickets are available until midnight Friday.
