Ryan Targeting Stability

05/12/2021

Boss Dean Ryan is targeting stability as Dragons bid to bounce back when they begin their European Challenge Cup campaign.

Dragons suffered a 33-14 defeat at the hands of Glasgow Warriors in Scotstoun in a disappointing evening for the Men of Gwent.

Ryan admitted his side were well beaten in Scotland with a number of key men missing and resources running low at the region.

But the boss is looking to stabilise the team and hopes they can start performing as a collective heading into European action.

“I don’t think effort is something that is up for question, we were well beaten in the first half hour of the game again and it’s a challenge for us to stay together in that second half," he said.

“We could have imploded trying to get back into it which is difficult, but as always we have to try and support this group.

“The current resources that we have at the Dragons and the strategy that gives us those resources means we got to put some guys out there that are right up against it. My job is to keep that stable and keep supporting them and I will do that today.

Ryan continued: “I think we were so under pressure that you then look at the mistakes as the result of that pressure.

“That is tough for us and we lose another one of our key players again today and we have to go younger to solve it all the time, so we are just about keeping stable and seeing what we can learn from that.

“That’s the second week in a row that it’s been too fast and probably too physical for us and there are some guys who are putting a big shift in there trying to stop it but as a collective we are not achieving that.”

Dragons suffered another injury setback against the Warriors with full back Jordan Williams leaving the field with a suspected broken hand.

Williams joins a lengthy list of players on the sidelines at the region with the likes of Ross Moriarty, Rhodri Williams, Gonzalo Bertranou, Elliot Dee, Jack Dixon and Ashton Hewitt all currently missing.

Ryan admits resources are being stretched with injury list mounting ahead of a French European double header - beginning with a trip to Perpignan.

But the boss is hoping a new competition may give the team a new lease of life before a big festive derby period.

He said: “I think going into another competition could breathe a little bit of fresh air into us, but I don’t think we can hide away from it with the current resources we got we are struggling to cope in this level of game.

“Probably at the start of the season when we had everyone on deck, but now we have lost a few through injuries we are finding that difficult. Let's keep stable, let’s keep together and let’s keep improving.”
