Dragons RFC centre Corey Baldwin is relishing the opportunity to get game time with the Dragons and determined to ‘to play as much as possible’ after his summer switch.
Baldwin, 24, made the move to Rodney Parade from the Scarlets prior to this 23/24 season, and impressed in the pre-season friendly against the Ospreys last week.
The former Wales Under-20s ace started his career with the Scarlets, before making a one season move to Exeter Chiefs before returning to Scarlets shortly after finishing a Business Management degree at the University of Exeter.
Baldwin worked with Head Coach Dai Flanagan during his time in Llanelli in 2019 and has a good relationship with his new coach.
“Having spoken to Dai, the way he told me he wanted to play, and the relationship I had with him at the time, made it an exciting prospect for me,” said Baldwin, discussing his move to Newport.
“My ambition is to play as much as possible. Wherever that might be on the pitch, I just want to play as many games as I can and then go from there to help Dragons push on.
“I'm speaking to the coaches and working on the little things each day. The more you play, the easier it is to get into a flow and then you get momentum and confidence. That’s the avenue I’m looking to go down.
“Since I’ve come in the boys have been great. They’re really good blokes working hard on the pitch and I think it brings a lot of competitiveness in the training scenarios.
“We’ve finished training today and it was a great competitive battle between both sides, so I think that will only bring more confidence and better prospects for the team.”
Baldwin can play both wing and centre and has emphasised that despite both his and the coaching staff’s desire to prioritise him on the wing, he is open to playing at centre if he is called upon to do so.
“It doesn’t really matter too much to me at this point, “he stated.
“In moving here my intention was to play on the wing so hopefully I’ll be able to play there, but then if I’m needed to play at centre I can move along to there as well.”
Baldwin’s next challenge involves facing his former club, the Scarlets, in our upcoming friendly at Parc y Scarlets tomorrow (Friday) night, promising an intriguing reunion on familiar turf for our new signing.
