Friday, Dragons RFC begin their European campaign as they play host to French side Montpellier in the European Challenge Cup.
This will be the third meeting between the two sides and the first at Rodney Parade.
The first was also a European Challenge Cup fixture, in the semi-finals of the 2015/16 season with the second a friendly ahead of the 2017/18 season a year later.
For the Challenge Cup clash, Montpellier were the hosts at the then named Altrad Stadium and had a team featuring World Cup winner Francois Steyn and brothers Bismark and Jannie Du Plessis along with former South African head coach Jake White.
Dragons came into the game after a memorable last-minute quarter-final win against Gloucester at Kingsholm.
The first half saw the hosts build a lead through the metronomic kicking of fly-half Demetri Catrakilis who slotted three penalties with a fourth added by Benoit Paillaugue.
With a half-time deficit of 12-0, Dragons started the second half promisingly, however a fourth Catrakilis penalty followed by a Bismark Du Plessis on the back of a driving maul.
The lead of 22-0 appeared insurmountable, but fullback Carl Meyer combined with Taulupe Faletau to set up a Hallam Amos score for an almost immediate response.
Meyer then went over himself with five minutes remaining, with the conversion provided by current squad member Angus O’Brien.
Dragons tried to mount a late attack in order to bring themselves within striking distance but time sadly ran out with the hosts advancing to the final with a 22-12 win.
Montpellier would go on to beat Harlequins in the final in Lyon, thanks to a brace from Aussie flyer Jesse Mogg and some more pinpoint goalkicking from Catrakilis.
O’Brien recalls the day: "It was a great occasion to get to the semi-finals of a European competition and to play a great side like Montpellier it was a fantastic experience."
"We were quite close in the end scoring a late try, gave it everything at the end. To play them again down Rodney Parade this Friday is an exciting occasion for us most definitely.
"It did hurt when we lost out there and we'll be looking to reverse the result this week!
"I know the boys really love playing in those European fixtures and a night game down Rodney Parade is always and exciting place to be and I know everyone is looking forward to so hopefully we have a great turnout and a good performance."
