Monday Memories: Dragons Complete Glasgow Double

10/02/2025

What do you say about the reigning URC champions?

Glasgow went away to Munster and won in the semi-finals of the URC last season before an astonishing 16-21 win in the final against Bulls at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

This season they are flying high once again, currently sitting second to Leinster in the table having won seven and lost three of their league outings to date.

Meanwhile, they are safely through to the round of 16 of the European Champions Cup after wins at home to Sale and Racing 92.

However, the Scottish side weren’t always such a powerhouse. Dragons completed a home-and-away league double against Glasgow in the 2020/21 season a feat they had also completed in 2013/14.

Dragons’ last win against Glasgow came at ‘home’ during the second of those two wins in the 2020/21 season, at the Principality Stadium on the 21st of March 2021.

That day, Dragons suffered a bit of an injury crisis, losing full-back Josh Lewis in the warm-up, before Ollie Griffiths and Jamie Roberts were both forced off early doors.

Dragons scored first however, through a Sam Davies penalty, before the visitors capitalised on Griffiths’ replacement, Ben Fry, being sent to the sin-bin, to go over from a driving maul, with hooker Fraser Brown the beneficiary.

Adam Hastings converted, before he himself received a yellow card as Dragons’ 10, Sam Davies, slotted two further penalties to regain the lead which could have been extended further were it not for Gonzalo Bertranou unfortunately losing the ball as he looked to cross the line.

Glasgow responded with a moment of brilliance as former Scottish international wing Rufus McLean picked up a bouncing ball before jinking his way through the Dragons defence and streaking 65 metres to score.

With Hastings again converting, Dragons trailed by eight points at the interval, but after another Davies penalty trimmed the deficit by three, Jordan Williams, replacing Lewis at full-back, produced his own moment of magic.

A set-piece lineout move from near Glasgow’s 10-metre line saw Sam Davies’ flat pass find Aneurin Owen who sat down two Warriors defenders and feed the angled run of Williams, who did brilliantly to catch the pass before stepping his way past the disgraced McLean to score.

Fewer than five minutes later and Dragons were over again, this time from close range as powerful carries from Harrison Keddie and Fry did the damage before Matthew Screech forced his way over.

Rhodri Williams was yellow carded late on but despite the visitors pushing hard for a late try to get back into the game the Dragons defence stood firm, capping a 26-17 win.

Dragons that day: Jordan Williams; Jonah Holmes, Aneurin Owen, Jamie Roberts, Ashton Hewitt; Sam Davies, Gonzalo Bertranou; Brok Harris, Richard Hibbard, Lloyd Fairbrother, Joe Davies, Matthew Screech, Harrison Keddie (capt.), Ollie Griffiths, Ross Moriarty.

Replacements: Rhys Lawrence, Josh Reynolds, Chris Coleman, Ben Carter, Ben Fry, Rhodri Williams, Nick Tompkins, Rio Dyer.
