Ultimate XV: Winger

16/04/2020

The Dragons Ultimate XV is almost complete with just two positions left to be picked! Now to see who will be selected as the right winger in our Ultimate XV feature – in association with doopoll.

The votes were cast and Welsh international Matthew J Watkins came out on top and sealed his place in the Dragons Rugby Ultimate XV alongside Ashley Smith in the centre– but who will join Aled Brew in the back three and be the right winger in the Ultimate Dragons backline?

Today we have selected six stars to pick for the winger spot.

Remember, if you think someone else is deserving you can nominate them too and we will act! Just comment when you vote!

Everyone who signs up and votes will be entered into a prize draw for a Dragons jersey.

Which of these nominations gets your vote:

Adam Hughes (2010-2014) (2015-2018) 119 appearances
Newport-born Hughes made his debut for the Dragons against Cardiff Blues in April 2010. That same year he was selected in the Wales Under 20 squad for the Junior World Cup in Argentina. Hughes amassed 119 appearances over two stints with the region scoring 22 tries, with a brief stint at Exeter Chiefs in between his time at Rodney Parade. Hughes retired in 2018 on medical advice.

Ashton Hewitt (2013-present) 84 appearances
Hewitt is one of the most exciting talents in Welsh rugby and committed his future to Dragons by signing a new contract at the region in the summer of 2019. The speedster from Newport will made his long-awaited playing return in the 2019/20 season after a shoulder injury ruled him out of the 2018/19 campaign. Hewitt came through the Academy ranks at Dragons and made his regional debut in 2013. The wing has twice been called up by Wales only for injury to rule him out of contention on both occasions.

Hal Luscombe (2003-2006) 51 appearances
Welsh international Luscombe spent three seasons at Rodney Parade accumulating 51 appearances from 2003-2006. The centre joined Harelquins in 2006 following his Dragons departure and spent two seasons playing at the Twickenham Stoop before finishing his career with Worcester Warriors in 2008-09 season. Luscombe retired at the age of 28 due to a series of injuries. He represented Wales at u21 level and earned 16 caps for the senior national team in his career.

Gareth Wyatt (2004-2009) 109 appearances
Born in Pontypridd Wyatt started his professional career with his local club before earning a regional contract at the beginning of the 2003 season with the Celtic Warriors. Following the Warriors disbanding, Wyatt earned a contract with the Dragons due to his ability to play in several positions. Primarily a winger, he managed 109 appearances and scored 29 tries during his five seasons at Rodney Parade. Wyatt returned to Pontypridd at the end of the 2009/2010 season following a brief stint at Newport RFC.

Tom Prydie (2012-2017) 93 appearances
Prydie signed for the Dragons from the Ospreys in 2012 and went on to make 93 appearances scoring 447 points in his five seasons at Rodney Parade, before joining the Scarlets in 2017. In January 2010, at the age of just 17, Prydie was a surprise inclusion in the 35-man Wales squad for the 2010 Six Nations, despite playing just 7 minutes for the Ospreys. Making his international debut against Italy, the winger became the youngest cap in Welsh rugby history at the age of 18 years and 25 days. Prydie also became Wales youngest ever try scorer in that same year when he touched down vs South Africa.

Will Harries (2009-2014) 97 appearances
Cardiff born Harries began his professional career with Northampton Saints where he spent three years including a season on loan at Bedford Blues. The winger signed for the Dragons in 2009 and made his debut against Glasgow Warriors in the Heineken Cup. Harries went on to make 97 appearances for the region scoring 21 tries before his departure in 2014. Harries has achieved 3 caps for Wales making his debut against New Zealand in 2010 and was also a regular for the Wales Sevens team.
