Dragons RFC are delighted to announce that star homegrown centre Aneurin Owen has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at the club.
The midfielder has become a key figure with the Men of Gwent and has made 64 appearances for the club since his debut in December 2020.
The 24-year-old - named vice-captain this season and called upon to lead the team in recent weeks – has long been seen as one of the rising stars of Gwent rugby, having represented Wales at Under-18 and Under-20s.
A former Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw pupil who also represented Ebbw Vale, Owen has started all but two leagues games since his return from injury in November and is a vital part of how the Men of Gwent operate.
Head Coach Filo Tiatia said: “Aneurin is an extremely valuable member of our squad and someone whose leadership has grown immensely this season. “Aneurin is a real servant to those around him and someone who leads by action with his behaviours.
“He is undoubtedly starting to really inspire the players around him with the way he performs as a young captain.
“Aneurin has been brought in as a vice-captain and is outstanding to work with, somebody who really wants to keep improving every day.
“I am looking forward to working with him both the rest of this season and the years ahead.”
Owen already has his own unique place in the club’s history as the 300th player capped by Dragons RFC and the Academy product is delighted to continue at the club he has supported since he was a youngster.
Owen said: “I’m really happy to have re-signed with my home club and excited for the next couple of seasons to come.
“I absolutely love playing at Rodney Parade in front of our fans, who have been great every single game we play.
“I believe we have the right people here, with an exciting number of Academy players coming through to start pushing on as we seek to become more successful than we have been previously.
“It’s been a big season with the honour of captaining the side in recent weeks and I’m excited about continuing to get better and develop my game at my club.”
Mae’n bleser i ni gyhoeddi bod canolwr y Dreigiau Aneurin Owen wedi arwyddo cytundeb hirdymor gan sicrhau ei ymrwymiad i’r clwb a’i dyfodol.
Cyn-ddisgybl o Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw, cafodd Owen ei gap cyntaf i’r clwb yn Rhagfyr 2020 ac ers hynny mae’r canolwr wedi gwneud mwy na 50 o ymddangosiadau i’r Dreigiau, gan sgorio pedwar o geisiau.
Chwaraeodd Owen dros Lyn Ebwy yn ogystal â thimoedd Cymru dan 18 ac 20 gan gael ei ystyried fel un o sêr dyfodol rygbi Gwent.
Nawr yn 24 mlwydd oed, mae Owen yma i aros gyda dyfodol disglair o’i blaen. Cafodd Owen, yn wreiddiol o Gasnewydd, anafiadau difrifol yn 2021/22 a 2022/23 a wnaeth amharu ar ei amser ar y cae.
Ond ers dod oddi ar y fainc yn erbyn Munster llynedd mae Aneurin wedi dechrau pob un ond dwy gêm yn y Bencampwriaeth Rygbi Unedig ac yn rhan hollbwysig o ymosod ac amddiffyn Dynion Gwent.
Yn barod mae gan Owen ei le yn hanes y clwb gan mai fe oedd y 300fed chwaraewr i dderbyn cap gan Ddreigiau RFC ac mae o’n falch i barhau gyda’r rhanbarth mae o wedi cefnogi ers yr oedd o’n iau.
“Rwy’n falch iawn i ail-arwyddo gyda’r Dreigiau ac yn edrych ymlaen at y blynyddoedd sydd i ddod.
“Rwy’n caru chwarae yn Rodney Parade o flaen ein cefnogwyr sy’n wych pob gêm rydym yn chwarae yno.
“Teimlaf fod gennym y bobl gywir yn y clwb, gyda nifer o chwaraewyr cyffrous o’r Academi yn dod trwyddo ac yn gwthio’r tîm i fod yn fwy llwyddiannus nag o’r blaen.
“Yn bersonol, eleni ges i’r fraint o fod yn gapten ar y rhanbarth am y tro cyntaf ac rwy’n edrych ymlaen at barhau i ddatblygu fy ngêm gyda’r clwb.”
