Dragons v Scarlets Match Report

Newport Gwent Dragons took on Scarlets in Judgement Day V at the Principality Stadium, Saturday 15th April.

Newport Gwent Dragons took on their West Walian rivals Scarlets at Judgement day this afternoon, and after leading the match for the first hour it was the visitors who took the spoils in the final 20 minutes.

It was the Men of Gwent who struck first thanks to the boot of Angus O’Brien after a penalty in the 12th minute. The young fly-half, who made his 50th appearance for the Region, doubled the points a few minutes later to see the scores on 6-0 after 15 minutes.

With the Dragons attacking deep into the Scarlets half, O’Brien attempted a chip over the defence only for Wales International Liam Williams to scramble and clear. However despite this, the Scarlets obtained an opportunity through their fly-half Dan Jones’ boot when hooker Rhys Buckley was penalised for a no-arms tackle.

The Dragons went straight back on the attack following this penalty but with the Scarlets defending their try line well the West Walians managed to force a knock on just a few metres short and that was the end of the first half.

Half Time: Newport Gwent Dragons 6 – Scarlets 3

The Scarlets come out of the blocks well and levelled the scores through the boot of their fly-half Jones.

Following this Dragons wing Adam Hughes was sent to the sin bin after he killed the ball and the Scarlets took full advantage of their 15th man as Jonathan Davies made his way down Hughes’ wing to score the first try of the evening. The try was converted by Liam Williams which saw the visitors take the lead for the first time 13-6.

O’Brien responded with a Dragons penalty only for Williams to add another three points seeing the scores on 16-9 to the West Wales outfit. The Wales winger then went on to secure the spoils with a try with nine minutes left but the Dragons had the final say.

It was Tyler Morgan and Angus O’Brien who put Adam Hughes under the posts and O’Brien’s extras made it 21-16.
