Dragons v Scarlets Match Report

Newport Gwent Dragons failed to make any territory they gained count today as the Scarlets took away a bonus point win at Jugdement Day III at the Millennium Stadium.

In a stadium, which topped the record books with an attendance of 52,762, the Dragons looked to reverse their loss from last weekend against Edinburgh and take away the win.

Fellow Welsh Region Scarlets took an early lead as Rhys Priestland slotted over a penalty after just 6 minutes because of a scrum infringement from the Dragons.

The Men of Gwent added pressure to the visitors as they passed the ball out wide and with a lovely offload from Jack Dixon to Tyler Morgan saw the young centre go over the try line. Converted by Dorian Jones the Dragons took the lead 7-3.

The Dragons went onto add additional points after they were awarded a penalty at the scrum. Dorian Jones took an almighty kick at the posts, which extended the Dragons lead to 10-3.

After another amount of pressure from the opposition as the Dragons had another crack at scoring a try as they turn the ball over. Prydie made a break for it and ofloaded to Captain Rynard Landman who made additional yards but he knocked the ball on before he could cross the try line.

It was Scarlets Ken Owens who made it over for the next try of the game after finding a gap in the Dragons defence. Priestland added the extras for the sides to draw level in the dying minutes of the first half.

But it wasn’t over there as the visitors struck again from the restart. Fullback Liam Williams gathered the ball and passed it wide to Scott Williams who claimed the try. Their fly-half added the extras once again and they took a lead of 17-10 into the second half.

Scarlets came out of the starting blocks well as within a few minutes of the second half they were over the white wash. This tie it was Liam Williams who scored the converted try.

Newport Gwent Dragons had their own chance to narrow the points gap but fly-half Dorain Jones missed the penalty kick they had gained with 53 minutes on the clock.

With around 15 minutes left on the clock the visitors secured their last try of the match, as Harry Robinson crossed for an unconverted try.

The Dragons came close to scoring during the closing ten minutes, first a neat kick from wing Tom Prydie nearly found replacement scrum half Luc Jones. The second chance came via Hallam Amos as he broke away from the Scarlets with Rynard Landman on his shoulder. Landman managed to get the ball away and it found Dorian Jones' hands who as he was tackled dropped the ball and knocked it on whilst over the try line.
