Dragons v Glasgow Warriors Match Report

Newport Gwent Dragons came away from the match against Glasgow Warriors with a losing bonus point this evening, after a last minute TMO decision saw a try awarded to a Duncan Weir try.

The Men of Gwent began the match well showing good intent from the get-go. The hard fought match saw just two tries awarded, with the Dragons holding onto the lead for the majority of the game through penalty kicks.

The Dragons made a fantastic start after opening their account first with a successful penalty kick from young fly-half Angus O’Brien. With Glasgow continuously pressurising the Dragons defence they eventually get their first chance to add three points to the scoreboard. Duncan Weir steps up to take the kick and he is successful, as the scores are even after 10 minutes of play.

But soon after, its Dragons fly-half O’Brien who opts for the posts; he nails the tricky kick and puts the Dragons back into the lead with two consecutive successful kicks. And with a yellow card awarded to Greg Peterson the Dragons looked to use the man advantage and continue their attack. However it was Man of the Match Weir who added the next 3 points to the scoreboard after 25 minutes.

Once the opposition were back up to full strength Angus O’Brien added another successful penalty kick making it four from four for the youngster, extending the Dragons deserved lead.

This ended the first half with the scores at 12-6.

Glasgow Warriors returned to the sandy pitch a different team and just two minutes into the second half, Alex Dunbar crossed for the opposition. The simple conversion for Weir took the scores to 13-12 to the away team, but they didn’t keep the lead for long as O’Brien’s boot once again kicked a lovely penalty over the posts to make the score 15-13.

The confident kicker then opted for a long range penalty on his next chance to add points, however this kick was to be his first of the night unfortunately. But as Glasgow grew in confidence supporters saw Gordon Reid cross the whitewash only for the try to be chalked off after being penalised.

As the game progressed the opposition got another chance to take the lead with a penalty kick, however Weir missed the kick in front of the posts. But as the clock ticked down it was Glasgow who had the upper hand after Duncan Weir crossed the whitewash. To the fans dismay, after a consultation with the TMO, referee Gary Conway awarded the winning try but the conversion was missed. And it was Glasgow Warriors who held onto the 18-15 lead until the death.
